A breakfast at the Governors official residence “Palácio das Laranjeiras” brought together the president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (PCL), Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, the President of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and Archbishop of Rio, Dom Orani João Tempesta, the president of the CNBB (National Conference of Bishops of Brazil), Cardinal Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno, the Governor of Rio, Sergio Cabral and the Mayor, Eduardo Paes, along with other civil and religious authorities.
The meeting, which initiated today’s activities, February 28, is part of the program for the PCL’s delegation visit to Rio. The delegation arrived yesterday from Rome for a series of meetings in order to prepare for WYD Rio2013.
The representatives of the PCL, the Vatican’s agency responsible for organizing the World Youth Day, will be in town until March the 2nd .
During the encounter, the governor of Rio said he was very impressed with the WYD in Madrid and moved by the announcement of the choice of Rio, made by Pope Benedict XVI at the closing ceremony (on August 21st, 2011). He also drew attention to the positive impression of seeing the crowd of young people living in complete harmony, stating that an event like the WYD generates hope for the future.
Cardinal Rylko said that the Holy Father is following all the arrangements carefully. "Each WYD is a manifestation of the young Church, full of enthusiasm and missionary zeal. I'm sure that the WYD will amaze Rio with the amount of young people which will come from around the world", he said.
"These are important steps in this journey for the preparation of the World Youth Day here in Rio de Janeiro. We had the opportunity yesterday to present the work accomplished and yet to be done by all sectors belonging to the Local Committee. Cardinal Rylko was impressed with what is already in progress and complimented what he saw, "said Dom Orani.
About the contribution of governments in the preparation for the WYD, Dom Orani mentioned the necessary structures that are under the responsibility of the federal, the state, and the municipal levels concerning the local displacements, the public roads, and safety, among other issues. The Archbishop also said that the sites to be selected to host the ceremonies with Pope Benedict XVI in 2013 are still being evaluated.
The activities were concluded in the morning with a visit to the Monastery of St. Benedict, in downtown Rio. The delegations of the PCL, the COL and CNBB, attended the Mass, presided by Dom Damasceno and concelebrated by Cardinal Rylko, by Dom Orani, by the auxiliary bishops of Rio Don Antonio Augusto Dias Duarte and Dom Paulo Cesar Costa, along with priests present at the time.
