Monday – July 22, 2013

8:45        Departure from Rome Ciampino Airport to Rio de Janeiro.

16:00     OFFICIAL RECEPTION at Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport 

17:00     PAPAL WELCOMING CEREMONY at the Jardim do Palácio Guanabara (“Gardens of Guanabara Palace”). Speech by the Holy Father.

17:40     Courtesy visit with the Brazilian President at Palácio Guanabara (“Guanabara Palace”).

Palácio Guanabara (“Guanabara Palace”) – Protocol reception of the three branches of government. The protocol reception will be done by President of Brazil- Dilma Rousseff, the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro- Sérgio Cabral, and the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro- Eduardo Paes.

Private housing at Residência do Sumaré (“Sumaré Residence”)- Rio de Janeiro.

Residência do Sumaré (“Sumaré Residence”) – The place where Blessed John Paul II stayed during his two visits to Brazil in 1980 and 1997. It´s a quiet place away from the rush of the city. Besides Pope Francis, the residence will also receive the whole papal entourage, which will include about 40 people.

 

Wednesday – July 24, 2013

Aparecida - A visit to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida was a personal request of Pope Francis, since he has public devotion to Mary, Mother of Jesus. There the Pope will celebrate Mass along with Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno, president of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, as well as the Archbishop of Aparecida.

8:15        Departure by helicopter from the Sumaré Residence heliport to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, in Aparecida, Brazil.

9:30        Arrival to the heliport at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida.

10:00     VENERATION OF THE IMAGE OF THE VIRGEN at the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida.

10:30     HOLY MASS at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida. Homily by the Holy Father.

13:00     Lunch with the papal entourage, the bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province of Aparecida, and Seminarians at the Seminário Bom Jesus (“Good Jesus Seminary”) in Aparecida.

16:10     Departure by helicopter from the heliport at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida to Rio de Janeiro.

17:25     Arrival to the Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro.

18:30     VISIT TO THE Hospital São Francisco da Tijuca (“St. Francis hospital”) Rio de Janeiro. Speech by the Holy Father.

 Hospital São Francisco da Tijuca (“St. Francis Hospital”) - Pope Francis will attend the inauguration of the “Pólo de Atenção Integrada da Saúde Mental (PAI),” created to provide services for the recovery from addiction and will remain as a social legacy. With 350 physicians, 500 health professionals, 648 hospital beds, 323 ward beds, 12 emergency beds, 75 ICU beds and 11 operating rooms, the São Francisco da Tijuca Hospital (formerly the Third Order of Penance / VOT ) is a general hospital, which provides care in 22 specialties. The institution pays particular attention to customer health plans and public patients, routed via the State Health Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro.

 

Thursday – July 25, 2013

7:30        Private Holy Mass at the Residência do Sumaré (“Sumaré Residence”) - Rio de Janeiro.

9:45        Giving of the Keys to the city to the Holy Father and the Blessing of the Olympic Flags at the Palácio da Cidade (City Palace) - Rio de Janeiro.

Palácio da Cidade (“City Palace”) - Eduardo Paes, the Mayor of Rio, will hand over the keys of the city to the Holy Father. This is a traditional and symbolic gesture, reflecting the respect for the Pope and the authority he represents. In addition, there will be a short meeting with representatives of the sporting world, with the Blessing of Olympic flags.

11:00     VISIT TO THE THE COMMUNITY OF VARGINHA – Rio de Janeiro. Speech by the Holy Father.

Varginha Community - After 33 years, a Pope will once again visit a poor community in Rio. Blessed John Paul II visited Vidigal in the South Zone of Rio in 1980. This time the Pope Francis will visit a slum in the North Zone of Rio. The community chosen was Varginha, within the Manguinhos complex, which was recently pacified by the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The Pope will speak to residents and give his blessing.

18:00     YOUTH WELCOMING CEREMONY to welcome the youth at Cobacabana Beach – Rio de Janiero. The Holy Father will greet the young people and give a speech.

 

Friday – July 26, 2013

7:30        Private Holy Mass at Residência do Sumaré (Sumaré Residence) – Rio de Janeiro.

10:00     CONFESSIONS OF A FEW YOUTH ATTENDING WYD WILL BE HEARD BY THE POPE at Quinta da Boa Vista (“Park of the Nice View”)– Rio de Janeiro.

Quinta da Boa Vista (“Park of the Nice View”) One of the most visited tourist sites in the city. It was the former house of the Emperor Pedro of Brazil. Quinta da Boa Vista will host one of the largest catechesis groups of the event, as well as the Vocations Fair. The Holy Father will hear the confessions of four young people here.

11:30     BRIEF MEETING WITH IMPRISONED YOUTH will take place in Rio de Janeiro at St. Joachim - the Archbishop´s Palace

12:00     THE ANGELUS will be prayed from the central balcony of St. Joachim - the Archbishop´s Palace . In Rio de Janeiro. Speech by the Holy Father.

12:15     Greeting of the WYD Local Organizing Committee and the sponsors of WYD at St. Joachim - the Archbishop´s Palace

13:00     LUNCH WITH THE YOUTH at the salão Redondo (round hall) at St. Joaquim-the Archbishop´s Palace in Rio de Janeiro.

18:00     VIA CRUCIS with the youth at Copacabana Beach – Rio de Janeiro. Speech by the Holy Father.

 

Saturday – July 27, 2013

9:00       HOLY MASS WITH THE BISHOPS OF WYD and with priests, religious, and seminarians at the Catedral de São Sebastião (Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Sebastian) in Rio de Janeiro. HOMILY GIVEN BY THE HOLY FATHER.

11:30     MEETING WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES OF BRAZILIAN SOCIETY at the Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theater). Speech by the Holy Father.

Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theater) – Pope Francis will meet with representatives of society from Rio the rest of Brazil at the Teatro Municipal. The building, which was built in the 19th Century, was one of the main stages for artistic performances in the country for many years.

13:30     Lunch with Brazilian cardenals, the presidente of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops, as well as, bishops from Regional Leste 1, and the Papal entourage at Grande Refeitório do Centro de Estudos do Sumaré (Dining Hall of the Center for Studies at Sumaré)- Rio de Janeiro.

19:30     PRAYER VIGIL WITH THE YOUTH at Campus Fidei in Guaratiba. Speech by the Holy Father.

 

Sunday- July 28, 2013

10:00     Holy Mass for the 28th WYD at Campus Fidei in Guaratiba. Homily by the Holy Father.

14:00     Lunch with the papal entourage at the Refeitório do Centro de Estudos do Sumaré (Center for Studies at Sumaré) - Rio de Janeiro.

16:00     MEETING WITH THE Latin American Episcopal Conference (CELAM) COORDINATION COMMITTEE at the Centro de Estudos do Sumaré (Center for Studies at Sumaré) - Rio de Janeiro. Speech by the Holy Father.

16:40     Departure from Residência do Sumaré (Sumaré Residence) - Rio de Janeiro.

17:30     MEETING WITH WYD RIO2013 VOLUNTEERS at Pavilão 5 do Rio Centro (Rio Center Pavillion 5) - Rio de Janeiro.

18:30     PAPAL DEPARTURE CEREMONY at the Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport. Speech by the Holy Father.
