What is World Youth Day?
World Youth Day (WYD) is more than just a meeting that thousands or even millions of young people flock to. WYD is a testimony of a living Church that is continually being renewed. Youth are the protagonist of this meeting of faith hope and unity. The main goal of WYD is let youth know about Christ’s message. It is also true that through them (the young people) the young ‘face’ of Jesus is shown to the world.

When is the WYD?
It is celebrated at a week-long international level every two to three years at different locations. The most recent one was held from August 16th to 21st, 2011 in Madrid, Spain.

Where and when will be the next WYD?
The next WYD will be held in Rio de janeiro, Brazil from July 23rd to 28th, 2013.

Everyone is welcome in WYD.

How did World Youth Day start?
The first WYD was celebrated in Rome, in 1986 at the diocesan level. The origin of the event is the meeting between John Paul II and young people in 1984 and 1985. In 1984, at the close of the Holy Year of Redemption, the International Jubilee of Youth was celebrated in St. Peter’s square in Vatican City, and the WYD Cross was given to the youth. In 1985 the Holy Father announced the institution of World Youth Day.

What happens during WYD?
There are several activities to attend such as catechesis, cultural events and moments for sharing your thoughts. There is also an agenda of major events (such as the Opening Mass, Papal Welcome Ceremony , Stations of the Cross, the Vigil of Youth with the Pope, and the Final Mass) among others.

What is the theme of the next WYD?
“Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19) is the theme of WYD Rio2013. The theme was announced by Pope Benedict XVI on the 24th of August, 2011.

Can I be a volunteer?

What are the accommodation options?
Participants will be accommodated with families as well as in schools, religious centers and gymnasiums. It is possible to choose your preferred accommodation when registering on-line.

What are pre-WYD or Days in Dioceses
Known as Pre-WYD, the Days in Dioceses are scheduled few days before the WYD. About 300 000 young people from over 135 countries took part in this preparation in 63 dioceses during Pre-WYD Madrid2011. The activities for these days leading up to WYD are organized by each diocese and include a range of cultural activities, historic visits, and parties. Of course the most important are the religious acts which include moments for praying, masses at local parishes and pilgrimages to in the area around the diocese.
